What Is GFRC?

Glass-fiber reinforced concrete is a composite of a fine cement-and-sand mortar reinforced with alkali-resistant (AR) glass fibers. The fibers do the job that steel rebar does in ordinary reinforced concrete — they carry tension and stop cracks — but because they are dispersed throughout a thin skin, GFRC can be cast as panels and shells only 10–20 mm thick instead of solid slabs. The AR glass matters: ordinary E-glass would slowly be attacked by the alkaline cement, so GFRC uses special zirconia-rich AR fiber developed for this exact chemistry.

How GFRC Sculptures Are Made — Step by Step

Premix (fiber blended into the mix, then cast or poured) suits smaller, thicker or more intricate solid pieces. A typical spray-up sculpture follows six stages:

Durability & Installation

Well-made GFRC lasts as long as pre-cast concrete and often outperforms it near the coast, because there is no steel to corrode and spall. It resists freeze-thaw cycling when correctly mixed and sealed. No. Fiberglass (FRP) is glass fiber in a plastic resin — it is a plastic that can be painted to look like stone. GFRC is glass fiber in a cement mortar — it is a genuine mineral, cementitious material that is concrete. GFRC looks and feels like stone; FRP imitates it.

How much lighter is GFRC than normal concrete?
